Amabere Ga Nyinamwiru
This is among the wonderful historical site with an interesting story that everyone would be anxious to hear and witness. A part from the history behind the existence of this site, it forms beautiful scenery with breasts looking-like a cows’ udder. A beautiful scenic rock with breast-like structures attracts many people to the site known as Amabere Ga Nyinamwiru found in Kabarole District in the western Uganda. Amabere Ga Nyinamwiru means the Breasts of Nyinamwiru in the l Toro legend. The name of this site was derived from Nyina Mwiru a daughter to King Bukuku of Toro kingdom.
It is believed that Nyina Mwiru was a very beautiful girl that many men admired to marry her and her father decided to chop off her breasts to reduce her great beauty and stop admirers though it did not stop them. Also it was prophesized that Nyina Mwiru would get married and give birth to a son called Ndahura who would kill the king and take over his throne. According to the legend, the prophecy came true and Nyina Mwiru was made pregnant by king Isaza leading to the birth of Ndahura. After cutting off her breasts, she was hidden in this cave where she was impregnated by king Isaza and gave birth to Ndahura. Since Nyina Mwiru had no breasts, she started feeding her baby on the milk dripping out of the stalactites hence Nyinamwwiru.
In scientific view, these breasts-like structures are stalactites made up of calcium carbonate when blended with water drip down. When the water drops contact calcium carbonate forms a milky colour which makes local people to call it “breast milk. The locals actually have a story about oozing of milk which attracts the attention of people to get involved in the milking of these breasts.
Amabere ga Nyinamwiru (Nyinamwiru’s breasts) is located in the Nyakasura caves which are made up of limestone (calcium carbonate) rock that forms the stalactites and stalagmites within the cave. They look like drooping human breasts which prompted the local to name them as Amabere ga Nynaimwiru. These features in the cave and the waterfalls have made the site a popular tourist attraction where people go to discover the myth behind their existence. The site has a cultural importance to the local tribe of Batooro who believe that the place has the powers of the Bachwezi, the rulers of the past Empire of Kitara.
This place is penetrated into a cool green cover of moss and fern with trees and rocks which present a beautiful view, calm and cool environment, the Nyakasura falls and the stalactite structure forms beautiful scenery. The milky stuff is calcium flowing from the rocks due to flowing waters of the water falls which rolls over the rocks forming these breasts like rocks, the size keeps on growing towards the ground to make a strong pillar. The history and look of the Breasts of Nyinamwiru create an incredible and memorable experience. The tourism activities that one may enjoy while at this place are: – rock climbing, eco-tourism and cultural activities, viewing at the beautiful scenery, milking of these breasts among others.
